Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 26-year-old female doctor (intern). My dad was diagnosed with a personality disorder with sexual deviation years ago. But I have only recently found out about the exact diagnosis. He has emotionally (and to some minimal extent physically) abused my mother, siblings, and me. This has affected us severely. I was treated for anxiety and depression for a year or so (I chose to seek help for that).

My question is, how can I make sure I do not turn out like him? Because I believe I have so many traits in common with him. How do I know I would not end up with a disease like his? Or that I do not already have something, but it is under control for now?

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

As you have mentioned, your father has a personality disorder. Personality disorders have a genetic basis, and children in these patients may also develop personality traits. But it is not compulsory that you will develop a disorder. One more thing, you are 26 already, and your personality starts developing in the adolescent age group, so by this time, you might have got symptoms like your father definitely, but you have not. So do not worry about it. Yes, you are more prone to anxiety and depression because of stressors. Do not hesitate to restart antidepressants next time if you develop symptoms. All the best

Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
