Are all pituitary masses life-threatening?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 33-year-old female and I have a 1.6 cm mass on my pituitary. For the past two years, my symptoms have gotten stranger and worse. My fingernails are falling off, confusion, and memory problems, I have had six episodes where I sleep for days. The longest was four days. I have lost my balance. All of my lab reports are within range. My lab reports are all over the place.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I just read your query and the reports that you have attached (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity). I am sorry for how you feel at the moment. I would suggest attaching the pituitary MRI report since the large pituitary tumor needs some treatment either surgery or medical if applicable. You have not mentioned anything about the treatment for this tumor. You have high lipase levels that can be caused due to alcohol consumption or pancreatic infection. Regarding vitamin D, you can take 1000 I.U vitamin D supplements daily for four weeks and then repeat the vitamin D test again. The alkaline phosphatase will correct on its own once vitamin D is replaced. Serum prolactin levels can be helpful in assessing pituitary functions and if an MRI pituitary is available then that will help as well. Your thyroid and other tests seem to be normal. The urinary tract infection is treated appropriately and you need to increase fluids orally.

Thank you.
