Why does my 2 year old breathe as if he ran a marathon?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My two-year-old breathes like he ran a marathon, coughs a lot, and I hear a wheezing sound.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

If your two-year-old has breathing difficulty with infection, usually it represents pneumonia. I would like to know in detail: Since how long? Any history of fever? Past similar history? What investigations were done? A family history of asthma or allergy?

I suggest the following:

1. Start on nebulization of Salbutamol (Asthalin).

2. Respule (Budesonide) diluted in saline. Give every four hours.

3. If breathing is still fast, you can give Duolin nebulization (Ipratropium Bromide and Salbutamol), alternate with Asthalin every two hours. Check heart rate.

4. Continue antibiotics, usually Amoxicillin oral formulation for seven days.

5. Give syrup Ascoril Plus Expectorant (Guaifenesin, Terbutaline, and Bromhexine) daily for five to seven days.

Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with them and start taking the medicines with their consent. Follow up after two days.
