Is it safe for me to take Xanax before Propofol anesthesia?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am having a polyp removed, and they will be administering Propofol. I am terrified of the anesthesia. I keep reading that it is a respiratory depressant. I am going to take Xanax beforehand. I want to know how safe it is.

Please guide.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

It is called general anesthesia. Propofol is an intravenous, very short-acting anesthetic. The anesthetist will control your breathing. It is a routine procedure. You can take Xanax (Benzodiazepines). It will calm and relax you.

Where is the polyp, you have yet to mention?

If they are using Propofol, it will be a short procedure. Please do not worry.

Hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

The polyp is in my uterus, and causes bleeding every day.

I am very grateful for your reassurance.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Do not worry, it will take a maximum of one hour. As you are overweight, they will insert a small tube-like thing when you happily sleep under anesthesia. You will not even know when it is inserted or removed. You may have a scratchy feeling after surgery, and you will be given opioids for pain.

Now general anesthesia is advanced and safe. Short-acting medications and safe anesthetics are available. The surgery is a minor one. So, do not worry do not take any stimulants, and sleep well.

Please do reply to me when the surgery is done.

Hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.
