How to treat swollen nostrils with metallic post nasal drip?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have a history of gastritis and hiatal hernia and was fine for several years. But it has come back due to me smoking marijuana. My GI doctor prescribed me Pantoprazole, which I have been taking for a month, but later I stopped taking Pantoprazole 20 mg because it messed with my teeth. My enamels are rough. But my biggest concern is my nose. I am suffering from swollen nostrils and severe post nasal drip that tastes metallic. It is entering my throat. The swelling in my nose makes it hard to eat. I have been losing a lot of weight because it slightly blocks me from swallowing. I can say the air is dry in my apartment, so I have been using a humidifier, but I do not think it works too much. Is there something you can help with the swelling in my nose? And why I keep having post nasal drip? I am currently on Afrin or Nasacort nasal spray, and I am using the neti pot.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

As per your concerns, the swelling you are describing is most probably turbinate hypertrophy. One treatment method is medical treatment, if it does not improve, it may require surgery, i.e., reduction of turbinate. And as you have post nasal drip and turbinate hypertrophy, the most common cause is allergic rhinitis. For now, use the following medication: 1) Tablet Levocetirizine 5 mg and Montelukast 10 mg once daily at night for two weeks. 2) Use nasal spray Mometasone furoate two puffs in each nostril two times a day for two weeks. Take steam inhalation two to three times a day. Avoid dust, cold, and any food that aggravates your condition. I hope this helps.
