I have recurrent infections due to preauricular sinus. What should I do?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a preauricular sinus on my left ear. It has not really caused any problems, until recently when I started experiencing recurrent infections. During the first infection, I took Ornilox, and it really worked. However, with subsequent infections, it has not really helped. Can you please advise me on which antibiotic to use or what to do?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

To find the most appropriate antibiotic, you can take a swab of the discharge from the sinus and send it for a culture sensitivity. That will reveal the microorganism and also the antibiotics it is sensitive and resistant to. Based on that information, we can institute the best antibiotic which you would respond to. The permanent solution for this issue would be the excision of the tract. It is a disease due to the maldevelopment of the external ear. Incomplete fusion of embryological components results in trapping of the epithelium-lined tract between the tissues and this produces a discharge and recurrent infection. Do revert back if you need any further support. I will be happy to help you.
