Can intake of herbal medicines affect pregnancy test results?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I got a positive pregnancy test result today. I have been taking the herbal medicine Agnucaston (Bionorica) 20 mg daily for the last 27 days to help with menstrual regularity. Can this medicine affect the pregnancy test result? I understand that it cannot, but I wanted to double-check. Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query and understood your concern. It is a kind of herbal medicine. There is no data on using Agnucaston (Bionorica) in pregnant women. You need to stop taking Agnucaston (Bionorica) during pregnancy. There is no data available regarding the adverse outcomes of the medicine. So we cannot scientifically say regarding the adverse outcomes. Better to wait for the next three weeks and do an ultrasound early pregnancy scan. I suggest you take tablet Folvite (Folic acid) one tablet once a day after breakfast. Folic acid is required in pregnancy for the prevention of birth defects. Do not stress yourself. Take care of your diet. I hope this answers your question.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Can the herbal medicine could it give me a false positive pregnancy result? I will stop taking the drug.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

As it is a herbal medicine, we cannot say whether it is a giving false positive report. However, you could do a serum beta hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) test tomorrow, which can confirm whether you are pregnant or not.

Thank you.
