Can spotting indicate pregnancy despite a negative pregnancy test ?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I had sexual intercourse three months ago, and I am unsure if I was taking my contraceptive pill correctly around that time. Afterward, I had a period that lasted a few days, similar to my usual menstrual cycle, but it ended sooner than usual. I am not on my period, but I am experiencing very light bleeding, almost like spotting. The blood is brown in color, and there is only a minimal amount, not enough to fill a tampon completely. I have taken two home pregnancy tests, and both results were negative. However, the thought of being pregnant still lingers in my mind. Please help.
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
How are you doing?
I can assure you that you are not pregnant.
Let me explain.
-
After three months of sex, had you been pregnant, your urine would have been at least weakly positive.
-
The irregular intake of the hormone pills has disturbed your hormone cycle and periods, so there is no chance of proper ovulation and, therefore, no proper periods.
-
At the age of 16 years, ovulation will not be regular as your hormone balance is not mature, so you may either bleed little or heavily or not at all. All this imbalance will be corrected in 19 to 21 years.
By seeing those negative results, you should have cleared your mind.
To confirm and get normal periods, have any of the birth control pills (21 pills packet), one tab twice a day for ten days (throw away the 21st pill).
Or, if you have Yasmin (3 mg of Drospirenone and 0.03 mg of Ethinyl estradiol ), have the active 20 tablets, and do not take the 21st and last seven inactive pills.
You will get periods within seven to ten days. Then, from the first day of the bleeding, have the same pill, one tablet at night. This will regularize your hormone balance, and next time onwards, periods will be regular.
I hope I have clarified your query, do write back if you have any more queries.
Regards.
