What is the pregnancy risk after foreplay and Plan B use?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

About three weeks ago, my boyfriend and I were in the shower. He touched his semen. We waited a few seconds, then he touched my vagina. He said he washed his hands before he touched me, but I was not sure, so I took Plan B the first chance I could, and that was about 27 hours later.

I am on birth control and have been for about ten years, but was late taking it that day (I take the Combo Pill). Hence, I took Plan B that day. It has been three weeks, and I had two tiny brown spots a day ago, and I have not gotten my period yet (three days late), and am having severe cramping.

Did I get pregnant, or did Plan-B mess up my cycle? My last period lasted almost ten days, and my periods normally last only three to four days.

Kindly help me.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to iclinq.com.

The chances of you being pregnant from non-penetrative foreplay are very low. Also, an emergency contraceptive causes hormonal imbalance and causes side effects like cramping, bloating, irregular spotting, and delayed period. So what you are experiencing is a side effect of the pill. This effect can last for one to two cycles.

Also, start your next birth control pack after a negative pregnancy test, even if your periods do not start. So my advice to you would be to take a home pregnancy test (to be sure) and start your next pack of birth control pills (even if you do not have your period).

I hope this helps.

Kindly revert so I can assist you further.

Thank you.
