HomeAnswersMedical GastroenterologyproctitisI had undergone treatment for proctitis, but I currently have constipation along with mucus and blood in my stools. Why?

How long would it take for a patient to completely recover from the symptoms of proctitis?

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had a colonoscopy. I have proctitis. I think I did well on Mesalamine. I finished all treatments prescribed by the doctor, and now the proctitis is better, but I still have symptoms. I suffer from constipation, but every time I go to the bathroom, I have a lot of mucus with some red on it and no feces or very few. I am concerned about that.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome toicliniq.com.

I have reviewed your case history in detail (attachments removed for patient identity protection),

1) You were diagnosed with proctitis (inflammation of the rectum only). They must have taken the biopsy. Is it diagnosed as ulcerative colitis?

2) As per your history, you used Mesalamine (5-aminosalicylic acid). Did you use Mesalamine (5-aminosalicylic acid) orally or in rectal enemas?

3) Your colonoscopy images, reports, and biopsy results should have been reviewed again if you have them.

4) There is a possibility that inflammation within the rectum is still persistent, so you still have mucus and some red on it.

5) There is a simple stool test known as fecal calprotectin levels. This can confirm ongoing inflammation within the colon (this is a good non-invasive method to monitor gut inflammation).

6) If it is ulcerative colitis and your fecal calprotectin levels are high, you will need treatment readjustment and be better once the inflammation goes down.

Wishing you good health.

Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
