Is it possible to correct front teeth length with veneers?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My two front teeth are much longer than the adjacent ones. For braces, I will have to remove four teeth, which I am not in favor and grinding will remove much of the enamel layer. I have heard about porcelain veneers and composite bonding techniques for altering the shape of teeth. What should I do?

Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I saw the photograph you have attached (attachment removed to protect patient identity) and I found that your front two teeth look bigger, but it is not, though. They are slightly forward from the dental arch (protruding front). By the law of nature, all four front teeth will not be of the same size and if it is so, then it will look very artificial. Regarding the braces treatment, you have been asked to remove all the fourth teeth from the center (premolars) to gain space. This space will be utilized when the protruding teeth are moved inward, which means at the end of the treatment there will not be any space in that extracted region. Now regarding the veneers, there are certain disadvantages. For both types of veneers, the teeth have to be ground to a level to fit them.

I mean grinding of the enamel, which you are not willing to undergo at the moment. Also, composite veneers have a big trouble in that they can easily get discolored and you have to repeat them periodically. You have not mentioned your age. But, considering the picture you have sent, I can suggest you opt for braces (orthodontic treatment) for a long time result. Even though the treatment takes months to years, it is more reliable instead of choosing an instant solution like veneering.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
