What causes rectal bleeding after bowel movements?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had rectal bleeding. I had it before as well, but it was mild. Nowadays, I am having heavy bleeding, almost always when I use the bathroom. Can I visit a clinic in the next couple of days, or is it urgent? Also, will I need a hospital visit?

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for writing.

I understand your concern.

Rectal bleeding can occur due to several reasons, like hemorrhoids or ulcers. It is necessary to find the cause in your case. Are you bleeding for the first time? Also, is the blood red or dark black? I suggest you use the tablet Tranexamic acid 500 mg once daily after food. This will help stop your bleeding. If it does not control, I suggest you visit a nearby clinic.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
