Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am currently in my third trimester and about to give birth. For the past three days, I have been experiencing red, itchy rashes all over my tummy, and they are very itchy. I also have a cold at the moment, but I do not have a fever. I do not have any other medical conditions, and I am not taking any medication besides the prenatal vitamins prescribed by my doctor. This is the first time I have experienced such rashes during my pregnancy. The rashes have also appeared on my thighs and arms, which is a bit worrying.

I have been using cold compresses to try to reduce the itchiness, but they have not provided complete relief. I have not had any contact with people who have measles or chickenpox, so I am unsure if these rashes are due to an allergy or something else. I have attached a picture of the rash on my tummy. The rashes appear to be a bit raised.

I am concerned about these symptoms and their impact on my pregnancy and health. I would greatly appreciate your advice on what could be causing these rashes and what steps I should take to address them.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern, but I do not think you have any reason to worry. It is unlikely that the cold is related to the rashes you are experiencing. From the appearance of the marks, they seem to be extremely stretched skin marks, which is quite common in the last few weeks of pregnancy. As the baby grows rapidly, the skin stretches, leading to an increase in stretch marks and itching. This itching is often relieved only after delivery. Since you do not have a fever, it is unlikely that there is any infection causing the rashes. Also, the absence of general weakness is a positive sign.

To find some relief from the itching, I would suggest you try using some irritants like Vicks, Balm, or eucalyptus oil, as they can create a burning sensation that might temporarily alleviate the itching. Just try to endure the itching for a few more days until delivery.

I hope this explanation brings you some relief.

If you have any more questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out.

Wishing you all the best as you approach the end of your pregnancy journey.
