Are symptoms like redness, pain, and swelling suggestive of HIV?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had unprotected oral sex with my girlfriend 15 days back. The next day, I had redness, swelling, and pain in my penis head. After three days, the swelling increased. I have discomfort when the climate is too hot or when I wear an undergarment. I am regularly cleaning the area with cotton, Suthol antiseptic liquid, and Neosporin gel. I feel relieved during rest, but I cannot do any vigorous activities when I wear undergarments and jeans. I am attaching the picture for your reference. Kindly suggest me an ointment. I am worried.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I have reviewed the attached pictures (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity). It looks like a fungal infection. If there is itching, I suggest you use ointment Candid B (Clotrimazole and Beclometasone) for local application and tablet Cetzin (Cetirizine) once at night. If it is a bacterial infection, you can use ointment T bact (Mupirocin) and tablet Doxy 100 mg (Doxycycline) twice daily for five days. Consult a specialist doctor, talk to him or her, and start the medicines with their consent.

If it is a sexually transmitted infection (STI), I suggest you to go for the below tests:

  • TPHA (treponema palladium hemagglutination assay).
  • HPV (human papilloma virus) DNA PCR test.
  • HSV (herpes simplex virus) 1 and 2 IgG.
  • HSV 1 and 2 IgM, serum.
  • Chlamydia Trachomatis IgG.
  • HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) 1 and 2 antibodies screening test.
  • HbsAg.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
