Why does rheumatoid arthritis cause persistent wrist pain?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 27-year-old female, and I was diagnosed with RA late last year. It has been persistent in my wrists this year. I was told to take Zycel 200 mg, but I feel something else could be wrong, as the pain and swelling are only in the wrists, more in the right hand. In my country, we do not have doctors to help. I read about carpal tunnel syndrome, and I need your help with it. I had sudden joint pain two years back, and it lasted for four months, negative for RA, and the pain suddenly stopped. And last year, I had sudden migratory joint pain with stiffness and swelling. I tested negative for RF then, and recently my RF factor was positive, so they put me on Zycel. From the beginning of this year, the pain has been persistent in my right wrist, with swelling and stiffness, which affects the fingers too. And on a few occasions, it attacks the left wrist or leg joints only.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

If you have been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, then it is possible that the swelling in the wrists is due to it. And moreover, we need to step up the treatment as only Zycel (Celecoxib) 200 mg is not enough to control it. It would be better if one could add Methotrexate as well, which will control the disease better and take a short course of painkillers. Do let me know for more queries.

Thank you.
