Why am I having pain in root canal treated tooth?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had a root canal treatment performed on one of my molar tooth (bottom right) a few years ago. I have had no trouble with it since then up until now. I have started getting pain which has lasted a few days and does not seem to go away. The dentist who performed the root canal on me had mentioned to me at the time after the procedure that she was not able to remove the last nerve as it was in an awkward position. So my worry is that could that nerve have become infected, hence the pain, or could it be some other cause? Could you please help me as I am in a lot of pain due to it?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

First of all, you need to start antibiotics like Amoxicillin-Clavulanic acid 625 mg twice daily for a week along with a painkiller three times a day. Mostly, it is due to the infected leftover root canal. You need to see an Endodontist to determine whether he can do retreatment for the tooth. If it is not possible, then you may well have to get the tooth extracted. Else, you can also go directly for extraction.
