How to protect a tooth that needs a root canal treatment?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have a tooth that needs a root canal treatment; however, due to the coronavirus restriction, I will consult the dentist only if I am in pain, but I am currently not in pain. The dentist I saw a few weeks ago said I should get the treatment done as soon as possible as it could become symptomatic. She put a temporary filling but did not start the root canal. I am concerned that waiting until the virus is over would be too late to save the tooth. Is there anything I can do to save it in the meantime?

Kindly help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. I suggest following the instructions until the root canal treatment starts.

  1. Avoid too hot, too cold, and hard foods that can start tooth pain.
  2. Use the other side for chewing. Biting food with the filled tooth could dislodge the filling and complicate things.
  3. Brush gently and leave the filling undisturbed.

As long as the temporary filling stays, this should be fine. But if this gets dislodged or you start having pain, visit the dentist for emergency care.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
