What are the chances of pregnancy in a 36-year-old female if her sonography report confirms the rupture of two ovarian follicles?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 36 years old and got an hCG shot of 10,000 IU 15 days ago. I had sexual intercourse for six days after taking the injection. The sonography reports confirmed that two follicles of size 19 and 20 mm have ruptured from both ovaries. My due date was yesterday, and the last menstrual period was one month ago. I underwent a pregnancy test in the evening and got negative results. What are the chances of my pregnancy, and when should I get tested again?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

As you have taken the hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) injection, a urine pregnancy test would not be the correct way to check for pregnancy. Instead, I suggest you undergo quantitative hCG titers (blood test) and repeat it after 48 hours. These tests can be done when you miss your periods.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor for the reply,

What are the chances of pregnancy if two follicles ruptured? Is there any chance of twin pregnancy?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

The rupture of the follicles is a sign of ovulation. The chances of pregnancy are always higher in a cycle with ovulation, but nothing can be commented on the pregnancy. The risk of twin pregnancy increases with ovulation, but rupturing two follicles does not mean you will have a twin pregnancy.
