How do I parent teenagers while living with schizophrenia?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 46-year-old woman living with schizophrenia and the mother of two teenage children. Thankfully, my symptoms are much more stable now than they were several years ago, and treatment has helped me regain a sense of balance in my life.

However, raising children while managing a serious mental health condition continues to be emotionally challenging at times.

One of my biggest worries is how my children view me. They were younger during some of my more difficult periods, and I often wonder whether those memories will overshadow the progress I have made since starting treatment and becoming more stable. I work hard every day to be present for them, but I still carry a lot of guilt about the times when my illness affected our family life.

I try to be honest and open with my children about my condition, but I am often unsure how much information is appropriate to share. I want them to understand what I have been through without placing an emotional burden on them or making them feel responsible for my well-being.

My questions are:

  • How can I best manage schizophrenia while raising teenage children?

  • How much should I tell them about my diagnosis and past experiences?

  • Are there healthy ways to talk about mental illness that help build trust without overwhelming them?

  • How can I cope with feelings of guilt related to the periods when my symptoms were more severe?

  • What can I do now to strengthen my relationship with my children and help them see the person I am today, rather than only remembering my most difficult years?

I would greatly appreciate your guidance on balancing my own mental health needs with being the best parent I can be.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and can understand your concern.

Thank you for sharing something so personal. It sounds like you have put a great deal of effort into your recovery, and reaching a more stable place is a significant achievement.

Many parents living with schizophrenia (a complex, chronic brain disorder that disrupts how a person thinks, feels, and acts) carry similar concerns about how their children remember the difficult periods of the illness. However, children and teenagers are often capable of seeing more than just the hardest moments. As they grow older, they can also recognize resilience, personal growth, and the love and commitment their parents continue to show every day.

Managing schizophrenia while raising teenagers involves continuing the foundations that have helped you remain stable, including taking medications as prescribed, attending regular follow-up appointments, prioritizing good sleep, managing stress, and seeking support when needed. Looking after your own mental health is not separate from parenting; it is an important part of being able to care for your children.

When it comes to discussing your condition with them, honesty is usually beneficial, but it does not mean sharing every detail. Age-appropriate conversations that explain you have a medical condition affecting mental health, that treatment has helped significantly, and that you continue to work on your wellbeing can help build trust without placing adult responsibilities on their shoulders.

It may also be helpful to create space for your children to share their own thoughts, questions, or feelings. They may have concerns, memories, or misunderstandings that they have never had the opportunity to express. Open and supportive conversations can strengthen your relationship and help them better understand your journey.

The fact that you are thinking so deeply about your children's well-being and how your illness may have affected them speaks volumes about your dedication as a parent. While it is natural to feel concerned about the past, relationships are not defined by a single chapter.

Over time, many children come to remember not only the difficult periods but also the strength, consistency, and love their parents demonstrated while moving forward and rebuilding their lives.

Be kind to yourself. Your children are not only witnessing the challenges you faced; they are also witnessing your perseverance, recovery, and ongoing commitment to being there for them, which can leave a lasting and meaningful impression.

I hope this answers your query.

Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
