Can major changes such as school change affect a child's mental health?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have an 11-year-old son. He is about to start his school. He has recently been having some stress. His father and I got divorced a few years before. He does not want to go to his father's home and misses me when he is there. He calls me every hour while there and cries himself to sleep. His father wants him to attend a better school. My son had an outburst of anger this morning and two days ago. After talking to him, he opened up and told me he was upset that he would not be able to attend school with his best friend. He is afraid he will never see him again. He also said it would be better if we did not divorce. I feel that my son's emotional and mental health will be affected by the school change. I am concerned for his mental health as major changes can affect kids.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

I understand your concern. You are correct. Major changes do affect children. But children are fast learners and fast adjusters. They will adjust to any given situation without much trouble, provided the right atmosphere is present. Your son is only 11 and is learning. Regarding school change, your son is just resisting change in scenarios. He could be stressed for now, but he will learn fast. I suggest you to follow a few instructions, talk to your son without prejudice and try to understand his concerns, and consult with a child psychologist.

I hope this has helped you.

Thank you.
