Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have a septate uterus. I was advised to see a reproductive doctor. But I am not sure of whom it refers. I want to fix this problem. If I get pregnant or plan to get pregnant in the future, I do not want any problem to occur. Kindly help me.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The septate uterus is a congenital anomaly in which there is a septum (an extra growth from the fundus of the uterus, straight down up to the cervix) extending into the uterus to different levels. This causes the uterus to be divided into two parts and effectively reduces space inside the uterus. This can lead to problems in conception and pregnancy. In conception, it may lead to miscarriage and infertility. In pregnancy, it can cause preterm labor, low birth weight of the baby, stillbirth, increased chances of cesarean section, and excessive bleeding during delivery. Therefore, this condition has to be addressed and treated. Your treatment option will depend on:

1) Length of the septum. Suppose the septum is very small (subseptate) and is not causing any decrease in size of the uterine cavity or problem in conceiving. Then, you do not need to do anything.

2) If the length is long, you will be offered hysteroscopy with septum resection, a minimally invasive surgery. Where a hysteroscope is introduced vaginally into the uterus and the septum is cut.

So I would recommend you go to a reproductive specialist who offers this service. I hope this was helpful.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
