How do I manage a painful fluid-filled lump on the penis?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

There is a fluid-filled lump on the top of my penis. I am experiencing pain and irritation. How do I manage?

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern.

Based on your description, if there has been a history of unprotected sexual contact, sexually transmitted infections should be considered. Please share a clear image of the affected area for better evaluation.

I would recommend the following tests:

  • Treponema pallidum hemagglutination assay (TPHA).

  • Human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test.

  • Herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 1 and type 2 Immunoglobulin G (IgG).

  • Herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 1 and type 2 Immunoglobulin M (IgM), serum.

  • Chlamydia trachomatis Immunoglobulin G (IgG)

  • Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) type 1 and type 2 antibodies, screening test.

  • Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg).

  • Urine routine examination.

If there is no history of unprotected sexual contact, the condition may be due to a simple bacterial infection. In such cases, a topical antibiotic such as Mupirocin ointment can be used for local application, along with Doxycycline 100 milligrams taken twice daily for five days, as advised by a doctor.

If itching is present, a fungal infection should be considered. A topical antifungal-steroid combination such as Clotrimazole and Beclometasone ointment may be used for local application. For relief from itching, Cetirizine may be taken once daily at night, if prescribed.

Maintain proper hygiene by washing the genital area twice daily with normal water. Avoid using very hot or very cold water and do not use harsh or heavily perfumed soaps, as they may cause further irritation.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
