Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have rashes or bumps on the sides of my thigh. They do not bother me, nor do they go away. Some of them appear like purple and red spots. They also appear on my stomach and buttocks. I have had this for the past four years. Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to Icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I have reviewed the pictures sent (attachments removed to protect the patient's privacy). It seems you have Keratosis pilaris (a condition that causes rough patches or bumps) or ingrown hairs. The most common cause of ingrown hairs is shaving, waxing, and tweezing unwanted facial and body hair. Leaving the sharp tip of the short hair close to the skin surface while removing it facilitates it to grow sideways or curl back into the hair follicle. It can get stuck under the surface of the skin, leading to irritation and inflammation of the overlying skin. Treatment for ingrown hairs can vary. Sometimes the ingrown hair will heal spontaneously without any specific treatment at all. You can use a topical steroid cream like 0.1% Mometasone cream once daily. Application for one to two weeks will decrease inflammation.

I hope this information will help you.

Please revert in case of further queries.

Thank you.
