How can ringworm infections be managed?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My husband is unwilling to go to the doctor because he says it is just a heat rash. It is been there constantly. Could you please give me an idea of what we might be dealing with? It does seem to get brighter when he is hot, but he also drinks regularly.

Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have noted the details about your husband and reviewed the photographs (attachment removed to protect patient identity). I believe your husband is suffering from modified tinea or ringworm infection. This is a fungal condition that is more common in hot climates and tends to spread to surrounding areas. It can be itchy for some patients, and alcohol use is known to be one of the factors that can increase the likelihood of an individual contracting such an infection. Under these circumstances, the following measures are most helpful for my patients:

  1. Minimize sweating or working conditions in which sweat tends to accumulate on the skin.
  2. Antifungal creams are effective and usually contain Clotrimazole or Miconazole.
  3. Antihistamines like Cetirizine can help with itching.
  4. Wearing loose garments is recommended, as they allow sweat to evaporate from the body.
  5. Finally, maintaining good hygiene is crucial.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
