Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 43-year-old man, and I have been snoring for a while now. It does not really bother me, but my partner is getting more worried that it might be a sign of a bigger problem.
I would like to understand how I can reassure them while also making sure I am not overlooking a condition such as sleep apnea.
Would you recommend undergoing a sleep study even if I do not currently notice any significant symptoms?
Could you suggest any simple lifestyle changes or home remedies that may help?
Please help.
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
Thank you for sharing your concern with me.
Snoring by itself is often harmless, but if it happens regularly and worries your partner, it’s a good idea to look into it further. Sometimes, conditions like obstructive sleep apnea are first noticed by a bed partner instead of the person who has it. Many people with sleep apnea feel fine during the day, so not having symptoms doesn’t always mean there is no problem.
For you, the best way to reassure your partner and get clear answers is to have a sleep study. This is a simple overnight test that gives a clear result. In my experience, it’s not unusual for people your age who feel fine during the day to still be diagnosed with mild or moderate sleep apnea, so symptoms alone do not always tell the whole story.
While you wait, there are some easy things you can try at home. Sleeping on your side instead of your back can help reduce snoring, since it’s often worse when lying on your back. Try to avoid alcohol or sedatives in the evening. Even a small amount of weight loss can make a difference. Also, keeping your nose clear with steam inhalation or saline sprays may help, especially if you have nasal congestion.
If your sleep study comes back normal, you can feel reassured that it is probably just primary snoring and not something serious. If sleep apnea is found, starting treatment early can help prevent future problems and improve your sleep.
I hope this addresses your concerns.
Please feel free to follow up if you have any further questions.
Thank you.
