How to manage non-radiographic spondyloarthritis?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My husband has non-radiographic spondyloarthritis, and his back pain worsens, especially when stressed. The pain can be quite intense, and we are unsure if probiotics or dietary supplements could help. He already has chronic pain, and I have heard that abdominal obesity might exacerbate it. Could supplements assist with pain management, or is there another approach he should take?

He is wondering if his adipose tissue is worsening his condition and whether weight loss could alleviate the arthritis pain.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Non-radiographic spondyloarthritis can be challenging, especially when stress exacerbates the pain. While research on probiotics and dietary supplements for this condition is limited, some studies suggest that certain supplements, like omega-3 fatty acids, may have anti-inflammatory properties that could potentially help with pain management.

Regarding abdominal obesity:

  1. Excess body weight can indeed contribute to increased inflammation and may worsen joint pain.
  2. Weight loss through a balanced diet and regular exercise could be beneficial, both for managing symptoms and improving overall health.
  3. Encouraging finger millet in a diet rich in whole foods, such as fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats, while reducing processed foods, can help.
  4. Stress management techniques, such as mindfulness, yoga, or physical therapy, may also alleviate some symptoms.

It might be worth consulting with a healthcare provider, such as a rheumatologist or a nutritionist, in person to create a tailored plan that addresses both his arthritis and weight management goals.

I hope this information helps you.

Revert in case of queries.

Regards.
