Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 55 year old male. I have ulcerative colitis for several years now, and despite trying various medications, including Ayurvedic treatments, I still experience symptoms. Recently, I have noticed the return of blood in my stools and an increase in the frequency of bowel movements. My doctor has now prescribed Stelara for my condition. I am interested to know more about Stelara and its effectiveness in managing ulcerative colitis. Specifically, can Stelara help alleviate the symptoms. I am currently experiencing, such as bleeding and frequent bowel movements? Any information regarding the potential benefits of Stelara in treating ulcerative colitis would be incredibly helpful. Thank you.

Hello,

Thanks for trusting us with your health care.

I can understand your concern.

As you might have read, Stelara (Ustekinumab) injection is an interleukin inhibitor that works by blocking certain proteins in your body, called IL-12 (interleukin-12) and IL-23 (interleukin-23), that cause inflammation in these autoimmune conditions. Stelara works by blocking the activity of IL-12 and IL-23, which reduces inflammation. You are suffering from ulcerative colitis, which is a chronic disease, and there is no definitive treatment for it. The disease itself presents as a long-standing illness, and the treatment is focused on symptomatic relief. It consists of periods of normal resolution of the disease and other periods, which may last for days or months, with severe symptoms. It is possible that you are currently in a period of flare, experiencing symptoms. Stelara surely helps alleviate the symptoms by reducing bowel inflammation. Dietary modifications, such as including a lot of fiber and increasing water intake, may also help with your symptoms. Try to incorporate more raw fruits, vegetables, and salads into your diet. All of these measures might aid in resolving your symptoms. As it is a chronic condition, patience is key. I am happy to help if any further assistance is required. I hope your symptoms alleviate as early as possible.

I hope this has helped you. Please feel free to reach me again, in case of further queries.

Thank you.
