How do I manage my stomach pain and difficulty standing?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am experiencing stomach pain, mostly on the right side, and difficulty standing up straight. I had body aches and a fever yesterday; both are gone today, but my stomach still hurts. When lying down, I feel normal again. What steps should I take to manage this?

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern.

I am concerned by the condition you are describing, especially because the pain is mostly on the right side, worsens when you try to stand up straight, and feels similar to your previous episode of appendicitis.

Even though the fever and body aches have improved, the persistent localized pain is not something to ignore. Viral illnesses like influenza can cause general aches, but they usually do not cause focused right-sided abdominal pain that limits movement in this way.

Pain that improves when lying still but worsens with movement can point to irritation inside the abdomen, and given your history, this raises the possibility of another appendiceal issue or a related complication. Other conditions can also cause similar symptoms, but appendicitis is one of the more urgent ones that needs to be ruled out quickly.

You should seek urgent medical evaluation today, ideally at an emergency department or urgent care, where they can examine your abdomen and possibly do imaging and blood tests. If the pain gets worse, you develop a fever again, start vomiting, or have trouble walking or standing upright at all, treat that as an emergency.

Until you are seen, avoid eating heavy meals, stay hydrated, and do not take strong painkillers that could mask symptoms before evaluation. This is not something to monitor at home for long, given your history and the pattern of pain.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
