What causes swollen tonsils after tonsil stones removal?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Two days ago, I removed my tonsil stones with a cotton swab at home. How long after the removal of the stones does the tonsil remain swollen?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Tonsil stone removal by self is often accompanied by tonsillitis or inflammation of tonsil. Swelling of the tonsils is occurring probably due to that. I suggest you gargle with lukewarm water with a pinch of salt twice daily. That will help you to reduce the swelling. If the swelling is not reduced even after 3 to 4 days, you can take anti inflammatory mouthwash containing Nimesulide. I suggest you refrain from removing stone by yourself. Because tonsillitis can be a very painful complication of that if you do not follow strict aseptic procedure.
