I have a swollen tonsil with red bumps in my throat. Why?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My throat has been hurting very bad for five days now. My tonsils are swollen and my entire throat is very red. On the back of my throat, I have yellow and red bumps. I have been running a low-grade fever off and on. I have been aching all over and cold. My ears hurt too. It hurts to swallow. I have tried over the counter medicine and it has not helped.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through the history and image. You have got chronic tonsillitis. Take antibiotics if you have got fever as of now. If the drugs are not working, it means you have used it so much unnecessarily already. In that case, you need to change the antibiotic you have already taken before. Other co-existing conditions you may be having which must be examined for. But right now complete the course of drug you have started or visit a doctor to change the drugs but add steam inhalation, warm saline gargles, and lozenges.
