How to cure an extraction site with pain and bad breath after a week of extraction?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I extracted my teeth a week ago. But I am still in pain from that teeth extraction though I am taking medicine. There is bad blood coming from that area. What is causing the problem, and in how many days will it will get resolved?

Answered by Dr. Naveen Thomas

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

If the wound is not healed due to the loss of blood clot from the extraction site and gets infected, it may cause intense pain and a bad smell. This condition is called dry socket condition. You will have to use warm salt water gargle three times a day and also take antibiotics and painkillers for a week more. First, go back to your dentist to clean the wound again to allow for faster healing. Take care not to touch the wound at all and avoid brushing on the wound.

Thank you.
