Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I experience severe pain in my jawline, ears, gums, tooth, and half of my face on my right side because of my tooth abscess, and my cheeks have been bloated. I can not sleep because of so much pain. What should I do to relieve pain before I go to my dentist? I am experiencing severe pain in my jawline, ears, gums, tooth, and half of my face on my right side due to a tooth abscess. My cheeks are swollen, and the pain is preventing me from sleeping. What can I do to relieve the pain before I go to my dentist? Currently, I am taking Amoxicillin. Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

I have reviewed the photos you attached (attachments removed to protect the patient’s identity), and the swelling on your cheeks is quite significant. It is called a spreading tooth infection. The antibiotic you had (Amoxicillin) might have temporarily stopped the spread, but until you get active dental treatment, your swelling is not going to go away. I suggest visiting the dentist immediately for treatment of the involved tooth. I suggest you take another antibiotic, Metronidazole 400 mg 12 hourly two times a day, along with Amoxicillin 500 mg six to eight hours three times a day. Kindly make sure you do not drink alcohol while you are taking these antibiotics, as they will not work. Please remember that antibiotics are not for pain and are not a permanent treatment. For pain relief, I suggest you take Paracetamol 1000 mg every four hourly. I suggest you do not delay a dental visit. Meanwhile, if you get a high fever or any difficulty swallowing or breathing, kindly visit the emergency department at your nearest hospital. It means you need urgent medical attention. I hope this has helped you. Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.

Thank you.
