What are the options to have a child after tubal ligation?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 46 years old, but my husband and I both desperately want to have our love child. I had a tubal ligation after my last son, who is now 18 years old. What are the best options for us?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Fertilization of the egg by the sperm occurs in the fallopian tube. So, tubal ligation prevents this. Although most tubal ligations are irreversible procedures, very few are reversible. However, pregnancy depends on other factors apart from just the patency of your tubes.

One striking factor about you is your age. At 46 years, your chances for a spontaneous pregnancy, even if your tubes were open, are very low. The chances of miscarriage if a pregnancy occurs are high, and the chances of having a congenitally abnormal child are high.

For these reasons, your best chance of getting your loved child is by IVF (In Vitro Fertilization). This would also offer an opportunity for pre-implantation genetic testing of the embryos obtained from the IVF for congenital anomalies before embryo transfer into your uterus.

So, your best chance is an IVF with pre-implantation genetic testing.

Kindly consult a specialist doctor, talk with them, and take medications with their consent.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
