Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have been taking Ciplavasc 5 mg (once daily) and Bilocor 2.5 mg (once daily) for the past two years, along with Metformin 500 mg (once daily) for type 2 diabetes. Metformin, for a while, is causing side effects like constipation, diarrhea, lower back aches, and sore kidneys. Blood sugar levels are well controlled.
I lead an active lifestyle, being involved in cycling and racing for the past 30 years. Recently, I have also been informed that I have prostate cancer signs, which were detected very early. It is being monitored. I want to use the natural alternative, Bio Berberine 500 mg.
Would there be a conflict with other medicines?
Kindly suggest.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understand your concern.
Berberine is a compound found in several plants, including the barberry shrub, and has been studied for its potential benefits in managing blood sugar levels. Some studies have suggested that it may be effective in lowering blood sugar levels and can be used as an alternative to medications like Metformin. However, the evidence is not as robust as that for prescribed medications and individual responses to supplements can vary.
As you have type 2 diabetes and are currently taking Ciplavasc (Amlodipine), Bilocor (Bisoprolol fumarate and Hydrochlorothiazide), and Metformin, it is essential to understand how berberine may interact with these medications. Berberine has the potential to lower blood sugar levels, and when combined with other medications that also lower blood sugar, it could lead to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), which can be dangerous. This is especially important if you are already achieving good blood sugar control with your current medications.
Additionally, berberine may interact with other medications and can affect liver enzymes that are involved in drug metabolism, potentially altering how other medications work in your body.
I hope this helps you.
Thank you for consulting me.
