Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My mother has typhoid fever. In the last week of last month, she had diarrhea and vomiting multiple times with severe headaches. Doctor gave her antibiotics for few days, and she felt better. However, after a week, she started having severe headaches, nausea, and vomiting, so she went for another blood and urine test, and the doctor mentioned that she had typhoid fever. They have now given her antibiotics and today is the third day of taking antibiotics. I want to understand the time frame of recovery after taking antibiotics. After how many days will she start feeling better?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your query in detail and can understand your concern. Recovery from typhoid depends on many factors,

1. Type and severity of the typhoid infection- There are three types of typhoid, normal, type A, and type B. And they have different severity and recovery rates. We consider typhoid infection positive if the antibody titer is above 200.

2. Strength and type of antibiotics given- Different antibiotics can treat typhoid, and some infections are resistant to certain antibiotics. So we may need to change antibiotics if she is not responding to them.

3. Patient general health- Concomitant diabetes, hypertension, or gall bladder problems can prolong her recovery time.

If everything is good, the fever will respond in five days, and complete recovery will take two weeks (that includes resolving fatigue and regaining a good appetite). If everything is not favorable, the recovery can take up to four weeks. If you can provide her with investigation reports, current treatment, and current situation, I can give a more accurate estimate, including whether she needs a different treatment or not. I would be happy to help you further if you have any other questions.

Thank you.
