Why do I get typhoid fever every year?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had typhoid fever two years back, and my TLC count also increased around 13000 per microliter of blood. Last year I faced the same problem. I am living abroad, that is why I cannot do my treatment properly. This year also I feel the same. Now almost four days passed, and I feel feverish every evening 99 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit but not above 100. The first day I felt very weak and dry mouth. Then now, I take my medicine, which was prescribed by the doctor. Could you please tell me why this happens every year? Why has the fever not gone? I cannot do the blood test right now due to a language problem. Please prescribe me medicines.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Typhoid fever can become a chronic ailment and cause recurrences. However, it does not mean you are having typhoid fever again.

Please let me know what treatment you received last time so that we could personalize treatment for you.

You need to do certain tests:

1. Widal test for typhoid and paratyphoid.

2. CBC (complete blood count), ESR (erythrocute sedimentation rate), LDH (lactate dehydrogenase), CRP (C-reactive protein).

3. X-ray chest (AP and lateral).

Take the following tablets:

1. Tablet Paracetamol 500 mg one tablet thrice daily for five days.

2. Tablet Zinc 50 mg one tablet thrice daily for 15 days.

3. Tablet Limcee (Vitamin C 500 mg) one tablet twice daily for 15 days.

Please revert with your earlier prescriptions.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

I take Cefixime, Ofloxacin, Aceclofenac, Paracetamol, and Chlorzoxazone tablets in the morning and evening.

I take pre and probiotic with L-glutamine capsule, Lycopene with Vitamins, and Minerals soft gelatin capsule in the afternoon. I took this medicine for four days. But the fever has not gone. So now, last night, I took only Azithromycin and Paracetamol.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Please attach your prescription. From your description, the exact regimen is unclear. Cefixime and Ofloxacin, given together, are often used twice daily in typhoid for a variable number of days and varying dosage strengths. But whether you have typhoid or not must be tested. Also, considering the pandemic, there may be other causes for fever. The latter reason may be tested, as well, if possible.
