Why does sensitivity in teeth occur after ultrasonic scaling?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I got my lower tooth filled a month ago and had a complete ultrasonic scaling on the same day. I was having too much sensitivity at the time of scaling and it was uncontrollable. The dentist gave me local anesthesia for the sensitivity. I also complained of my tooth sensitivity which I was facing.

After the treatment, I was advised to use a desensitizing toothpaste but still, I face the same issue when I eat ice creams. Does a desensitizing toothpaste take at least some months to work on sensitivities?

Kindly suggest.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The sensitivity after scaling is a normal feature that gets relieved once teeth are fully covered again by salivary pellicle. Usually, it lasts for 24 to 48 hours.

In order to avoid it, it is better to ask the dentist for polishing after scaling and use high fluoride toothpaste. If sensitivity still persists after a few days, then it needs to be investigated for any erosion, abrasion, and others.

I hope this has helped you. Please feel free to reach me again, in case of further queries.

Thank you.
