Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
We had protected sex for the first time after my ovulation ended, seven days before this. Later, we had unprotected sex in which he pulled out, a day after. I had lower stomach pain the day after having unprotected sex.
And now having it again six days after, with some spotting. I took Postinor 2 half an hour after unprotected sex, and the second dose 12 hours after the first dose.
It is now six days later since having unprotected sex, and I have had spotting and lower abdominal pain. Could I be pregnant?
Please suggest.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
The chances of pregnancy in your situation are very low, but not absolutely zero. I understand you had unprotected sex after ovulation had ended. The fertile window typically ends about 12 to 24 hours after ovulation because the egg only survives for that long.
So, emergency contraception is highly effective if taken within 72 hours. Between the timing of your cycle and taking emergency contraception, pregnancy is unlikely.
Like you said, you have spotting and lower abdominal pain, which are quite common after:
Emergency contraception can disrupt your menstrual cycle and cause irregular bleeding or cramps.
Hormonal changes, like sudden shifts in hormones after emergency pills, can lead to spotting.
Another reason is implantation. Although unlikely in this case, spotting sometimes occurs when a fertilized egg implants in the uterus.
Pregnancy is unlikely, but not impossible.
So I hope you now understand that spotting and abdominal pain are common side effects of emergency contraception.
If your period does not start in a week or more, or if you experience other symptoms like severe pain, nausea, and so on. It would be good to take a pregnancy test or consult an obstetrician.
I hope this helps. Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.
Take care.
