I had unprotected sex. What are the chances of pregnancy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had my last period in the second week of this month, and then I had unprotected sex two days after my period. My cycle is irregular. So I was asking if there are chances I may be pregnant or if I should use a control pill.

Kindly suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Since you had unprotected sex two days after your period and your periods were in the second week of the same month, the pregnancy risk may be lower if ovulation had not yet occurred.

However, because your cycles are irregular, it becomes difficult to predict your fertile window accurately, and this makes it harder to completely rule out the possibility of pregnancy. Therefore, even if the chance may not be very high, pregnancy is still possible in this situation.

In such cases, timing plays an important role in reducing the risk further. If the intercourse happened within the last 72 hours, you can consider taking an emergency contraceptive pill to further reduce the risk of pregnancy.

The sooner it is taken, the more effective it tends to be in preventing pregnancy. Conditions like unintended pregnancy are best prevented with timely contraception rather than waiting and worrying afterward.

At the same time, it is also important to know that emergency contraceptive pills can temporarily affect the menstrual cycle. Because of this, your next period may become slightly irregular or delayed if you take the emergency pill.

In most cases, this settles on its own, but if your period gets delayed by more than a week, I would suggest doing a pregnancy test for confirmation and reassurance.

For future safety and peace of mind, regular contraception or condom use would help avoid repeated stress, confusion, and uncertainty related to pregnancy concerns. How many hours or days have passed since the unprotected intercourse?

Kindly revert with the answers.

I hope you find this helpful.
