Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 23-year-old female. I had protected sexual intercourse for the first time about six days ago. For the last one to two days, I have been experiencing a burning sensation while urinating, a frequent urge to urinate every 15 minutes, and I noticed a small drop of blood once. There is no fever, no back pain, and no unusual discharge or odor.
Kindly advise.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have read the query and understand the concern.
The symptoms you have described are suggestive of a urinary tract infection (UTI), specifically acute cystitis.
The commonly associated symptoms include:
Burning sensation during urination.
Frequent urge to urinate (even every 10 to 15 minutes).
Occasional presence of a small amount of blood in urine.
Absence of fever or back pain in the early stages.
These symptoms are typical of a lower urinary tract infection involving the bladder. Sexual activity, particularly first-time intercourse, can increase the risk of UTI because bacteria may be introduced into the urethra and bladder during the process.
Acute uncomplicated cystitis (lower urinary tract infection or bladder infection). The presence of a small drop of blood may occur due to irritation and inflammation of the bladder lining. This condition is usually treatable with a short course of antibiotics.
It is advisable to consult a doctor as soon as possible for:
Urine examination (urinalysis).
Urine culture.
Prescription of appropriate antibiotics.
Antibiotic treatment often provides relief within 24 to 48 hours after initiation.
I would suggest the following measures:
Drink plenty of water.
Do not delay urination; pass urine whenever there is an urge.
Avoid the use of perfumed soaps or intimate washes in the genital area.
Wear loose, cotton undergarments.
For pain or discomfort, Paracetamol may be used if needed.
As preventive advice, I would suggest urinating soon after sexual intercourse. Maintain gentle hygiene using plain water before and after intercourse.
Seek urgent medical attention if you develop:
Fever.
Chills.
Nausea or vomiting.
Pain in the back or sides.
An increasing amount of blood in the urine.
These symptoms may indicate that the infection is spreading to the kidneys and requires immediate medical care. This condition is common after first sexual intercourse and is generally simple to treat when managed promptly.
I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.
Thank you.
