Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 41-year-old, and I have had chronic hives almost daily for over a year. Antihistamines only partly help.
Kindly help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understood your concern.
I am really sorry you are dealing with daily itching like this, because chronic hives can be exhausting and unpredictable, and it is understandable to look for anything you can control.
In almost all cases of chronic urticaria that have persisted for more than one year, it is not caused by any outside allergens such as fragrances, but rather it results from the activation of the immune system inside the body. This is why it tends to remain persistent even after staying away from potential triggers.
Fragrance may irritate or make the condition worse in sensitive skin, and thus, using products without fragrance is a smart and safe choice. But it will not solve the issue of hives if the patient actually suffers from chronic spontaneous urticaria. It is quite evident that you have both good and bad days.
If fragrances were a major trigger, you would usually notice more consistent improvement within a couple of weeks after strict avoidance, as the skin barrier tends to calm fairly quickly once irritants are removed.
A mildly elevated IgE (immunoglobulin E) can be seen, but does not necessarily indicate a specific allergy in this situation. Since this is significantly affecting your sleep and work, it would be useful to review your treatment plan with a doctor.
There are stepwise treatment options beyond standard antihistamines that can provide better control, even when specific triggers are not identified, so you do not have to rely only on avoiding environmental factors.
I hope it helps.
Thank you.
