Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I ovulate every month, but I get my period once every two to three months.

Is it possible for an 18-year-old who has never had sex to have uterine scarring?

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Your query needs to be clarified.

  1. How do you know you have uterine scarring?
  2. Did you have any laparoscopy or surgery?
  3. How do you know you ovulate?
  4. If you mean adhesions around the uterus, the possibilities are

    1. Endometriosis- Every month, blood comes out of the cervix, but a small fraction goes into the uterine surrounding through the tube. This blood will form adhesions or scarring around the uterus.

    2. Tuberculosis is the only infection that can infect a virgin. It causes severe scarring and adhesions around the uterus.

In the case of ovulation, any lady who ovulates will have periods after 14 days. The hormone progesterone released from the remains of the ovulation will act on the uterus and cause periods in 14 days. In case of scarring of the inner lining of the uterus by infections like TB, the lining will not increase in thickness, and periods will be light or like discharge once in a few months. If there is no ovulation, it could be due to polycystic ovarian disease, thyroid abnormality, or prolactin abnormality, which needs a blood checkup.

    Thank you.
