Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have had a vaginal discharge and I am a little concerned about it. I am also trying to get pregnant at this time. I would like to know if this discharge is normal or if it could affect my chances of getting pregnant. Could you advise me what could be causing it and do I need any tests or treatment?
Kindly advise.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
Vaginal discharge is very common and often perfectly normal, especially when trying to conceive. The important thing is to know what it looks and smells like and if there are any other symptoms.
During the menstrual cycle, hormonal changes cause vaginal discharge to change.
This is called fertile cervical mucus, and it is clear, slippery, and stretchy (like egg white). This is a good sign when trying to conceive, as it helps sperm travel more easily to the egg and usually occurs around ovulation.
Creamy or milky white discharge without odor or itching can also be normal before or after ovulation.
In early pregnancy, you may also notice a slight increase in discharge.
Normal discharge does not affect the chance of pregnancy. In fact, fertile cervical mucus helps you get pregnant.
A medical evaluation may be needed if the discharge exhibits any of the following characteristics:
Clotrimazole is a common treatment for yeast infections. Yeast infections usually have thick, white, curd-like discharge.
Metronidazole is often used to treat bacterial vaginosis (BV), which can cause a fishy odor and a thin , gray discharge.
Yellow or green discharge can be a sign of an infection or a sexually transmitted infection (STI).
Associated symptoms include itching, burning, pain with urination, pelvic pain, or foul odor.
Some infections can impact your fertility and should be excluded as soon as possible, particularly untreated bacterial vaginosis (BV) or sexually transmitted infections (STIs). It depends on your symptoms.
You can consider seeing a gynecologist if you want to get a vaginal swab or test for discharge.
It smells bad.
There is irritation or itchiness.
The discharge is yellow, green, gray, or cheese-like.
Difficulty conceiving for more than 12 months (or 6 months if above 35 years of age).
I would recommend the following tests:
Wet mount or vaginal swab examination.
Vaginal pH test.
Testing for yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis (BV)
Testing for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
Ovulation tracking and fertility assessment if required.
By looking for clear, stretchy cervical mucus you can figure out when you are most fertile. The ideal time for sexual intercourse is:
The day this mucus is noticed.
Next 1 to 2 days
Ideally every one to two days during this fertile window.
If you have any other info about the discharge (color, consistency, smell, when in your cycle it happens), I can give you more advice about what is and is not normal discharge.
I have read your query and understand your concern.
Thank you.
