How to manage vertigo?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had vertigo for 12 years on and off and have not been well for 12 days. I felt dizzy and light-headed, my head felt cloudy, and my knees were weak. I felt as if I was gonna faint; I was at my doctor's place. He said I had low blood pressure and it was vertigo. He prescribed me tablet Serc 16 mg for three days, and now started with 8 mg. It does not seem to be working, as I have a dull headache all day. I am a 33-year-old female. Do these tablets take a long time to work? Is it anxiety or something else? Can I take Serc (Betahistine) with Diazepam 5 mg.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Vertigo has to be evaluated thoroughly to find out what exactly causing it. Since you have had this problem for many years, a detailed evaluation is necessary.

Low blood pressure can make you dizzy and fatigued but technically it is not vertigo.

I suggest you to do the following things:

  1. A detailed evaluation of your ear including hearing assessment to rule out conditions like Menier's disease.

  2. Hallpike test to rule out benign positional vertigo.

  3. Routine blood investigations and electrolyte assured since electrolyte imbalance can mimic vertigo.

  4. Computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be required to rule out any brain condition causing vertigo.

Treatment options depend on the severity of the illness and the cause of vertigo.

  1. Since you have low blood pressure, drink a lot of water and have salted drinks when you feel dizzy.

  2. Medical therapy using drugs like Betahistine (antivertigo medication) and tablet Cinnarizine (antihistamine) would provide good results.

  3. You can take the tablet Serc (Betahistine) (histamine analog) with the tablet Diazepam (Benzodiazepines).

Kindly consult a specialist doctor, talk with them, and take proper guidance.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
