Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My uncle is 58 years old and is suffering from an H3N2 infection. He is under the doctor’s observation as his infection remains severe even after giving appropriate medications. His blood sugar level remains high and we want to know a second opinion on whether high blood sugar will reduce the recovery state of a patient. How to control his blood sugar and take care of him during this infection?

Hello,

Yes, definitely, high blood sugar reduces the chances of recovery. If he has high blood sugars it is very important to bring them under control at least till he makes a recovery from his present illness. If he is on oral anti-diabetics, he needs to have the dosage modified such that his blood sugars come into the normal range. The blood sugars need to be monitored ideally at least one to two times a day, till the modified dosage is able to bring the sugars down. If he is very sick and not able to take oral anti-diabetics alone, the best option would be temporary rapid-acting insulin three times a day. It can be given after checking his blood sugars with a glucometer three times a day. It can be given for a few weeks till he is better. Do not worry about this as once he is better, insulin can be stopped and he can go back to being on oral anti-diabetics only. I hope this helps.

Thank you.
