How to manage vomiting in an 8-year-old?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My son ate some junk food yesterday and has been vomiting since this morning. He is unable to retain even water. He is eight years old.

Kindly suggest appropriate medication.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Persistent vomiting in an eight -year-old, especially if he cannot keep even water down, can quickly lead to dehydration and weakness. Because of this, rather than starting medication immediately, he should be assessed in person if the vomiting continues or worsens over time.

In the meantime, the most important step is maintaining hydration carefully and slowly. Give small sips of oral rehydration solution (ORS) frequently rather than larger amounts at once, as large amounts may trigger more vomiting. If he vomits, wait about ten minutes and then try again slowly with very small sips. This gradual approach may sometimes help the stomach tolerate fluids better.

At the same time, avoid oily foods, spicy foods, soft drinks, and more junk food, as these can further irritate the stomach and worsen symptoms. Once the vomiting settles, start bland foods such as bananas, rice, toast, curd, or khichdi, since these are usually easier to digest and better tolerated.

Additionally, I suggest you watch for warning signs, including:

  1. Reduced urination.

  2. Dry mouth.

  3. Severe abdominal pain.

  4. Fever.

  5. Unusual sleepiness.

  6. Blood or green vomit.

  7. Loose stools.

He might need oral antiemetics like Ondansetron, but if he cannot take anything orally, he will vomit again. If he still cannot keep fluids down over the next few hours, he needs intravenous fluids and injections rather than oral medicines, along with urgent medical care and immediate emergency evaluation.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
