Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been experiencing this for the past four months. I have installed an AC at home and started wheezing in the middle of the night, chest tightness, etc. It is still there with wheezing at random times especially while sleeping with or without AC. A cough sometimes with minimal phlegm. The doctor gave me a cough and cold medicine for tonsils but it did not work. I am afraid to sleep in the AC now. Please help. Symptoms include wheezing while lying down, clearing throat, and coughing but the doctor said no presence of phlegm in the lungs. Is it something serious like cancer or edema?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The symptoms you are experiencing can occur in a myriad of conditions. But we have to exclude two systems: respiratory and cardiac. Is your breathlessness precipitated or worsened by exposure to cold or any dust, any foodstuff or during emotional stress? Does it worsen on walking or climbing stairs? Do you have to sit up and go to a window during the night and open windows? Is there any sputum production and chest pain or any palpitations? Did you have any fever? Have you done an ECG and a chest X-ray?

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

Yes, one night (in the AC) I woke up with chest tightness and had to get up and open the doors. The uncomfortable feeling went away after I sat up straight and walked around. Wheezing seems to be worsened in cold air or when in conditions (not so severe wheezing) where I breathe through my mouth while exercising. I hear a whistling sound while breathing in, seldom early morning after waking up or sometimes in the AC. I have not done any ECG or X-ray since my doctor said it is because of my tonsillitis. I took an antibiotic and cough and cold medicine for five days). The condition is not worse but not better as well. I also have mild sinusitis (hereditary) and post-nasal drip. No fever and had pain in the chest due to gas. Get a little phlegm when I cough but not every time. I cough mostly to clear my throat of post-nasal mucus or as a reflex to wheezing. Wheezing is mostly but not every day at dawn or sometimes in the day which goes away in minutes. Is it something to be worried about as I have never had such a problem before? I do not have problems sleeping at my friend's house in AC.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

It is likely that some allergen in your room may be causing these symptoms. I would recommend you to get your curtains, bed covers and pillow covers frequently changed. Further, when you clean your room, do not enter the room for half an hour and let the dust settle. You may take antihistamines like Montair LC (Montelukast and Levocetirizine) for 10 days. Meanwhile, you should get an ECG done.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
