Is the removal of all wisdom teeth safe?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have an infection in my lower left wisdom teeth. The doctor drained my operculum and suggested getting all four wisdom teeth removed. I am freaked out because the lower ones are not completely erupted. I have attached my X-ray. Can you please tell me whether it is safe to do this procedure? Will I get any complications?

Kindly help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Both lower wisdom teeth are impacted; they have to be removed, as and when required (attachment removed to protect patient identity). You can get the tooth removed from the upper and lower on the same side causing pain. If you only remove the lower one, then the upper teeth will not have a rest and cause cheek trauma. Yes, the procedure is safe. It is done under local anesthesia.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Will it cause damage to my nerves? The doctor is saying that he will go with general anesthesia. What shall I do?

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

No, it will not damage your nerves. Usually, we prefer local anesthesia to general anesthesia, because we remove two teeth at a go. If he gives general anesthesia, then get all four teeth removed at the same time.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
