How can the pain from an erupting wisdom tooth be managed?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 23 years old. I have a dental issue. My wisdom tooth is coming out, and it is a bit painful. Although the pain has reduced, I guess there is an infection. There is a cyst underneath my jaw.

Kindly assist.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and can understand your concern.

First of all, regarding the swelling, which you assume to be a cyst, it could be a lymphadenopathy (swollen lymph node). It shows that there is some inflammation or an infection process going on. Regarding the wisdom tooth, if it has space and is in a correct position, it will come out; otherwise, there is a chance for it to be impacted.

An OPG will be needed to assess that. For now, go and consult your dentist for an examination, as the pain could be due to pericoronitis (inflammation of the gums covering the erupting tooth). Do lukewarm water salt gargling.

I suggest taking Aceclofenac 100 mg after food morning and night, in case you have severe pain; otherwise, no need. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him or her, and start taking the medicine with their consent. If you have acidity, I suggest Pantoprazole 40 mg once daily, half an hour before food. For the inflammation/infection, you can take a capsule of Amoxicillin morning, noon, and night after food for five days.

But these are symptomatic treatments. Kindly meet your dentist for the examination and treatment plan. If you have decreased mouth opening, then also, do not worry; these medicines will help relieve it. Consult your dentist as soon as possible.

I hope this answers your query.

Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
