Will my second molar shift after wisdom tooth extraction?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

If I get my wisdom teeth extracted, do my second molars shift in that empty spot?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

No, it will not shift to the empty space, but it might tilt and that too very little. Because the third molar is vestigial. If you have any associated problem with the third molar you can extract it. If you do not have any problem, do not remove it. In case you have any caries or repeated pericoronitis, you must remove it. My answer is no shifting but slight tilt only.
